The Health and Human Care Team is exploring the possibility of collaborating with Exodus Refugee and the Bloomington-based Refugee Support Network to create one or more Welcome Teams to support Afghan refugee families who will be arriving in Bloomington soon.
A “welcome team” is a group of 10 people, usually from a single organization, who are assigned to a single family. The welcome team helps the family get to their early appointments (the first couple weeks are full of them!), helps get the kids settled in school, and generally helps the newcomers figure out how to navigate this new space.
Those helping with many (but not all) of the services that we will assist will need to fulfill certain requirements:
- proof of vaccination
- background check
- able to provide transportation
- complete training program
Lots of people find this really rewarding—it’s a year commitment, so you get to know the family very well! To learn more please sign up here:
Material items for setting up a household will also be needed (a wide range of items: from furniture and appliances to personal items, school supplies, etc) as well as space to temporarily store items until they are distributed. Please DO NOT PURCHASE/DONATE YET. We will likely have more specific needs after being assigned a family. But you may click below to get a general scope of items that may be needed. We will update this page as we receive more information.
